Tommy Lee Tears Into New Sound With Mayhem
By STEVE APPLEFORD
Tommy Lee has left the '80s behind. At the El Rey Theatre on Wednesday, his new band Methods of Mayhem made music that was
frenetic, funky, loud and aggressively contemporary, virtually casting aside Lee's longtime career as the drummer of L.A.'s
old metal heroes Motley Crue. Standing at center stage with a guitar on the first of the group's two nights at the El Rey,
Lee chopped out tight, urgent riffs. He was a surprisingly dynamic, excited frontman, and unafraid to share the spotlight
with his band. The sound was part metal, part funk, with sudden pop flourishes, all riding a hard, relentless beat from
former Jane's Addiction drummer Stephen Perkins. Even amid the storm of energy and noise, many of the songs were dramatic
and melodic. Adding much to the energy level was the rapping of co-vocalist TiLo, who paced a stage crowded with band
members (including a DJ) and the occasional appearance of guests such as Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst, who was joined by a
couple of strippers. "I'm so . . . surprised," Lee declared early on. "This is my hometown and you don't have your clothes
off yet!" That situation didn't last long, as several members of an audience heavily weighted with rockers and half-naked
women soon demonstrated. Just because Lee has left the music of Motley Crue behind doesn't mean the man has changed his
habits.

A review from Allstar about last night's El Rey show:
Methods Of Mayhem's Live Show Far Outshines Album March 23, 2000, 10:15 am PT
Methods of Mayhem
When former Motley Crue drummer and frequent L.A. County Jail resident Tommy Lee put together Methods of Mayhem and headed
for the studio, a perplexing array of guest musicians felt compelled to put in their two cents. The resulting debut features
input from Snoop Dogg, Lil' Kim, George Clinton, Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst, Kid Rock, Filthee Immigrants, U-God
(Wu-Tang Clan), and Scott Kirkland (Crystal Method), who all helped make the album a more memorable experience than it
might otherwise have been. But beyond the celebrity factor, the ensemble does generate some genuine charisma and the music,
monomaniacal as it is in a posturing rap-rock style that has become all too familiar, has enough muscle to wrangle your
attention for a while. Which basically sums up the live show the band put on at Los Angeles' El Rey Theatre Wednesday
(March 22) night. Frontman TiLo (formerly of hed p.e.) was an action-packed vision in day-glo decked out in orange faux-fur
chaps, a bright yellow T-shirt, and scared stiff hair as he capered his way through the scant 50-minute set for a fairly
amped-up full house. Guest appearances by Filthee Immigrants (which joined in for a spry and bouncy rendition of the
politically juiced "Proposition F*ck You") and Durst who was accompanied by the requisite "exotic" dancers livened up the
evening. The musicians couldn't legally fulfill the titular promise of "Get Naked," but Durst, ever a paragon of taste,
took the opportunity to bury his face between the ample and scantily clad breasts of one "dancer." Lee has been waxing
rhapsodic about his penchant for club music, hip-hop, and electronic dance ditties, and those elements were omnipresent on
Wednesday in the relentless, hulking grooves that hammered and slammed the tunes home. Methods of Mayhem does the rap-rock
thang better than many, but it's becoming an uncomfortably crowded field and it remains to be seen how long M.O.M. can ride
the trend.

A review of the show from mtv.com:
Methods Of Mayhem Kicks Off Headlining Tour
Tommy Lee's rap-metal project Methods Of Mayhem kicked off its first-ever tour in Vancouver Thursday night with an
arena-sized production in a 1000-seat club. The show featured quadraphonic sound and racks of moving, strobing, and
stationary lights tucked into almost every square foot of available space. Not surprisingly, the opening-night performance
saw technical glitches that caused a long-delayed start and some downtime after Lee's flashy opening drum sequence. The
audience response was for the most part enthusiastic, although most seemed to think that the show had been abruptly halted
by yet another technical glitch, when in reality, it was the end of the scheduled set. In spite of the crowd's lack of
an audible ovation, the group, which consists of Lee, rapper and band co-founder TiLo, guitarists Chris Chaney and Kai,
and Jane's Addiction/Porno For Pyros drummer Stephen Perkins, returned to the stage for an encore. Prior to the concert,
the personable Lee told MTV News he was indeed nervous. "But it's a good nervous, it's not like uncomfortable nervous," he
explained. "I would have liked to come here yesterday and set up." The band chose the opening-night site of Vancouver
for a variety of reasons, Lee said, and not just because it provided a convenient kick-off point for a stint down the
West Coast. The drummer-turned-frontman was also based in the city for months while recording with Mötley Crüe in the
'80s, and MoM guitarist Kai is from Vancouver and plays with the locally based Noise Therapy. The city is also the former
home of his on-again-off-again wife, Pamela Anderson Lee, who was not in attendance. Lee politely declined to discuss the
current rumors that he and Anderson Lee are again on the outs. Lee did confirm, however, that Snoop Doggy Dogg, who appears
on the Methods Of Mayhem album, had been scheduled to make a guest appearance at the show, but the rapper, who is in
Vancouver shooting his movie "Bones" (see "Snoop Dogg To Roll 'Bones,' Plans 'Greatest Hits' LP") was called back to
Los Angeles for a family emergency the previous night. A source close to Lee also told MTV News that Limp Bizkit's Fred
Durst was tentatively scheduled to put in an surprise appearance, and he may still do so for future shows.
Please post your own reviews about the show on the message board. We'd love to read 'em! |
